Personal Statement

Even in a developed country like Japan, there are many elderly people sleeping on the streets in a big city. Among these homeless people, there are those who are struggling to get back on their feet, but society tends to label them all together as being “lazy” with only themselves to blame for their misfortune. Given the cost of social security accounted for 52 percent of the general expenditure in 2013, the Japanese government can no longer fund welfare projects on its own. Poverty and welfare are the most serious and urgent issues that must be solved in an aging society with a falling birth rate. The study of social policy, which surveys the existing system and its goals is essential to identifying the root of the poverty problem and developing specific solutions. By combining my field experience with a chance to study at the LSE’s Social Policy course, I dearly wish to become a responsible citizen who can give back to society by tackling one of its most persistent problems as someone who has enjoyed privileges and a good education.

The study of social policy is essential to identifying the roots of today’s complicated problems of poverty, social exclusion and social inequality. One of the biggest appeals of this subject is its problem-oriented aspect which puts academic knowledge into practical use. By combining my field experience with academic training in the LSE’s MSc Social Policy and Planning course, I hope to learn a variety of approaches to tackling some of our most persistent social problems. After graduation, I plan to go on to a career in XXX.
